Abstract: This project was made with the main purpose of characterizing and explaining how political violence has affected the democratic quality of Colombia—or not—by providing a theoretical concept of violence and how it is applicable in the context of Colombian politics between 1948 and 2016. A series of events, national governments, ideas, and political figures were analyzed. A basic concept of democracy and what democratic quality means were provided with the aim of measuring and evaluating the way—or the ways—political violence has affected the democratic quality of Colombia—or not.
The project utilized a methodological framework based on the critical analysis of various documents (articles and books) about the sociopolitical history of Colombia during the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The aim was to have enough reliable sources for the analysis of the impact of political violence on Colombia's democratic quality.
