Abstract: This research seeks to study the acknowledgments of democracy and how these affect democratic participation in the school government in Liceo Taller San Miguel’s social environment in 2023/2024 to identify positive and negative elements. Based on the analysis of the results, the researchers compare the answers from middle and high school students of Liceo Taller San Miguel, taking into account the opinions of their teachers on the topic. Regarding the analysis of the results, strategies to strengthen the democratic participation of students and what these lead to are created.
The qualitative methodology captures students' ideas and feelings about the topic and more profoundly understands the population. The data collection methods implemented are as follows: two focus groups that analyze the students, one for middle school and the other for high school, where the students have to answer questions about their knowledge and opinions. Also, interviews with their teachers will be conducted to compare what they teach and what students know. The investigation develops in the social-political line.

| Resultados Principales | Since the project focuses on a community (Liceo Taller San Miguel), a random sampling method was chosen to have students from different social groups and grades, from Middle School and High School, to guarantee various opinions about democracy and the school’s government. A series of focus groups were developed to get their points of view, in which four general questions with subtopics were made, and their answers were collected through voice notes. The focus group was made in a classroom where students could feel comfortable with the environment because the questions contained a sensitive topic. In that way, they could express themselves more fluently and freely. The students were recorded with previous authorization, and their opinions were written anonymously. To have views from different perspectives, one teacher in social studies from Middle School and another from High School were interviewed with similar questions from the ones made to the students, but with differences. Thus, the data collected included teacher's and students' points of view, and with the variety of these, a compelling examination of the community could be done. A drive document is in the folder with all the voice notes transcribed. |
| Conclusiones | Through the analysis of focus groups regarding democracy and school government in middle and high school students of Liceo Taller San Miguel in 2023/2024, it can be said that improving democratic education and promotion in the school is necessary to improve the student's participation in the school’s government. According to the research question: How is democracy manifested and interpreted in Liceo Taller San Miguel, and what elements can be identified and changed in some middle and high school students in 2023/2024? The discussion groups showed how the concept of democracy has a lot of interpretations, and each student has a different idea of what it is. |
