Abstract: More than 200 different species of mushrooms contain psilocybin, a substance that shows promise as a treatment for people with mental depressive disorders (MDD). Psilocybin studies, history, and evidence suggest that the substance is used since hominids encountered psilocybin in animal waste during their extended walks, and some cultures even incorporated it into their rituals. This semi-systematic literature review shows different perspectives and relationships between history progress, mental health use, and some legalizations. The results include some graphics showing the findings about the categories previously shown.

Methodology The methodological framework is designed to address how psilocybin (a psychedelic hallucinogenic drug) has progressed and changed in its implementation to improve mental health. This involves answering the question: How does psilocybin (psychedelic hallucinogenic drug) have progress and change in the implementation to improve mental health? Information will be collected by reviewing articles, documentaries, and books to learn about the history of psilocybin and its effects on the body and mental health. The hypothesis is that psilocybin can be considered a good or bad substance for the body depending on how it is consumed.
Results The implementation of psilocybin, even though it has scientifically demonstrated excellent results, also presents advantages and disadvantages. Notably, its use is not recommended for individuals with a tendency towards schizophrenia. Other negative effects can include paranoia, hallucinations, and vomiting, and misuse or misinformation may lead to overdose. On the positive side, psilocybin can be more effective and cost-efficient compared to traditional antidepressants. It has the potential to improve daily life aspects such as mood, focus, and the creation of new neural networks.
Conclusions Throughout the whole research process, the results showed that psilocybin is a mushroom that can become an excellent ally concerning the management of mental health problems in people with depression and personal improvements. Even so, psilocybin does not show beneficial use for some people, thanks to a lack of knowledge about its proper use, leading some to view it negatively. Based on the results, it can be concluded that its history shows a pattern of societal negativity, and if not used appropriately, it may continue to be seen as harmful. However, current scientific evidence, such as that reported by Wertheimer in a BBC article in 2023, shows that psilocybin’s therapeutic use is now legal in places like Australia and Oregon.
